ALLTEL is an active participant and authorized service provider for the E-Rate program administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) Schools and Libraries Division (SLD). E-Rate was introduced in the Telecommunications Act of 1996 as a form of providing support to bring new technology into the nation’s schools and libraries. Schools and libraries began receiving benefits from E-Rate in late 1998.

The Schools and Libraries Discount program, known as E-Rate, is in full swing. As educators across the U.S. update their technology plans, they are meeting with representatives from ALLTEL to discuss communications solutions. Schools are looking for ways to provide their students and staff with the most up-to-date communications solutions on limited budgets. The E-Rate program is a method of providing these advanced services within their budgets.

The Form 470 window opened in early summer to initiate the competitive bidding process. The E-Rate program provides discounts of 20 to 90 percent in four categories of service: Telecommunications Services, Internet Access, Basic Maintenance and Internal Connections. The first two categories, Telecommunications Services and Internet Access, which ALLTEL offers, are considered ‘priority one’ and are consistently funded each year.
